If you are sick of paying high prices for cable and satellite programming, pull up a chair next to me! I don’t have either of them because its not a necessity and well, I am a student so you can imagine my budget. The great thing is that the internet has made it possible to watch shows, and even more recently, products have been made to make it even easier to watch the shows. Roku XD is a small box that hooks up to your tv and internet to stream the shows right to your tv. We have a Netflix and a Hulu Plus subscription, they run together around 16 dollars. All we had to do was hook up the box and activate the player on the site and I had it ready to go. I had access to not only my Netflix and Hulu Plus but also some built in internet channels. They had a good selection of different genres but it was a LOT of older movies and shows. I liked it for what it is, its small and out of the way, and can be used wireless or wired.
Now the thing about this is that we have a Playstation 3 and at the time we could stream to it from Netflix via a disc that Netflix sent. We didn’t like using the disc as we felt it was putting extra wear on the machine. That is why we wanted the Roku, so we wouldn’t need to use the PS3. As fate would have it, the day the Roku arrived we got an email from Netflix announcing that we no longer needed to run the disc to stream Netflix. So this made our need for the Roku less.
However because of the built in channels, we found some great westerns and my Father-In-Law begged to use it and we finished the review with him. He loves it. He is a really big westerns and old movies fan and didn’t want to pay for satellite either so this was a blessing for him.
Best For: I would say this is a perfect solution for someone who DOES NOT have a PLAYSTATION 3, WII, or XBOX 360. And at a price lower than $100 its definitely a much cheaper option than getting a game system to stream.
