Every once in a while a product request comes into my inbox that just grabs me. As an avid baker most all products related to baking get a once over from my eyes. However one in particular grabbed me to the point that I am happy to be a sort of ambassador for. Gramma’s Cutters, makers of old fashioned cookie cutters, you know, the kind you remember as a kid, asked me to partner with them and I said yes!!
The story of Gramma’s Cutters goes back to 1949 when the founder’s grandmother bought her set of cutters from Aunt Chick. Years would pass and the production would stop on the original cutters. The owner, Carrie, wanted to revitalize the traditions and they located the production mold for the Jolly Santa and she stated a website to sell the cutters, and the business grew from there! That means the cutters are the same as they were in the 1940’s!! Nostalgia at its best, as these molds produce the timeless look we all love. They offer many different themed cookie cutters AND pretty much everything you need to decorate them!
Grandma’s Cutters sent me the Aunt Chick’s Merry Christmas set to play with and I zoned in on the Santa.
He is a nice size about 4.5 inches!! I was asked to create a yummy cookie recipe and show you how cute the cookies ended up. Challenge accepted!
I went with a spicy twist on my sugar cookies but used one the frosting recipe on Gramma’s Cutters for the frosting! These cookies taste so much like christmas I can hardly stand it!!
Spiced Sugar Cookies – Serves 12
1/2 C. Unsalted butter, softened
1 C. Brown Sugar, Packed
1 Egg, beaten lightly
1/2 TSP. Vanilla extract (I used 1 TSP because I had imitation)
1 3/4 C. All-Purpose Flour
1/2 TSP. salt
1 TSP baking powder
1 TSP Cinnamon
1/2 TSP Nutmeg
Dash-1/4 TSP Ground Cloves (this is a very strong flavor along with nutmeg and some like more in cookies. I used 1/4 tsp and my family loved them)
Instructions: (this is a refrigerated dough, you have to let the dough chill out at least 4 hours)
Cream the butter and sugar in a stand mixer. While you do that, add your dry ingredients together in a separate bowl. Set Aside.
Add your egg, wipe the sides of the bowl, and continue mixing, adding the vanilla.
In small batches, add the flour mixture until blended.
Form ball with dough, wrap in plastic wrap and throw it in the fridge for at least 4 hours, overnight is better.
Let dough sit for ten minutes at room temp, we need pliable dougn 🙂
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)n. Line your cookie sheet with a silpat mat or parchment paper.
Roll the dough out to 1/4 inch. I know it seems thick but you need thick dough or Santa’s face won’t fill in all the way. Cut your cookies, re-rolling leftover doughs to get 12 cookies out of the dough.
Bake cookies until the edges just start to brown, 10-12 minutes. Let the cookies chill on the pan for 1 minute before transferring them to the cooling rack.
Gramma’s cutters has some amazing tips and tricks for decorating, and I made the frosting recipe, which for just 12 cookies was a LOT of frosting but that’s okay! For The Santa hat, I didn’t have any good TRUE red gel color so I melted some Wilton candy chips, topped with a pearl candy, and for the “eyes” I used a small black gel icing tube. The cheeks are actually the first attempt at the red frosting. Seriously! I used my finger and put a tiny bit on the cheeks, rubbedm and got rid of the excess. The frosting was pink and not red but it worked for the cheeks. Super fun to decorate with the kids too 🙂
There was only one cookie left the next day so I would say they were good!
