Baked Ziti

It’s extremely hard to find real fresh tomatoes in the middle of winter, like right now. I like to buy organic tomatoes but even then they aren’t always picked at the right time, they get picked early and are ripened artificially. I LOVE my fresh tomatoes but when push comes to shove and the good tomatoes are gone, I turn to canned tomatoes for my sauces and in this case, Red Gold. Did you know that Michigan, the state I live in, is the ideal state to grow tomatoes? This makes me proud of our state, and put me completely on board when Red Gold asked me to try their tomatoes.

For this little test, I put my 14 year old budding chef (ok the truth is I want this kid to know how to make more than ramen in college) to work and decided he would make Baked Ziti. I used the Tomato Sauce, Crushed Tomatoes and Stewed Tomatoes from Red Gold. It was easy for my kid to mix since it was from cans and he made the sauce and noodles, mixed, topped with cheese and baked.

It is that simple! But ohhhhh look at the yummy result!

  130. Made the Baked Ziti today…..fantastic; I’ll keep it to use again. I changed the recipe as follows: (1) substituted 1 pound Italian sausage for the ground beef, (2) used 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes + 14 1/2 ounce can of stewed because I prefer crushed to sauce, (3) used less than 1 pound ziti, (4) used only 2 tablespoons sugar, (5) used about 3 cups mozzarella.

  131. Mary Beth Elderton says:
  132. If I win the Red Gold Tomatoes, I’m definitely going to make the Baked Ziti!
